Opportunities

Welcome to the Opportunities page of my research group. I am building an interdisciplinary team to explore questions in statistical ecology, forecasting, and biodiversity dynamics. If you are motivated, curious, and excited about combining quantitative methods with ecological questions, I’d love to hear from you!

🎓 PhD Opportunities
There are three pathways to join my group as a PhD student:

1. Direct PhD Enrollment ( Can start anytime )
  • If you already hold a fellowship, e.g., CSIR NET-JRF (Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Statistics), INSPIRE Fellowship (DST), DBT-JRF (Life Sciences/Ecology), you are eligible to join directly as a PhD student under my supervision. I encourage interested candidates to contact me anytime.
2. Project-linked Research → PhD Pathway ( Will open from Summer 2026 )
  • If you don’t yet hold a fellowship, you may join initially as a project-linked person PLP. You will be supported to transition into a PhD under my supervision upon securing a fellowship (NET-JRF, INSPIRE, etc.). Once a fellowship is secured, you can smoothly transition into a PhD under my supervision.
  • IMPORTANT to NOTE: Students who have already qualified for the NET (PhD only) category would be given priority over students who have not qualified for the NET at all. In that case, without CSIR funding, which supports NET-JRF qualified students, you can do a PhD with your PLP stipend.
3. Secure PhD funding from ISI
  • You can appear for ISI JRF entrance test - this test is held every year on the second Sunday of May for different subject categories. If you are really interested in joining my lab where we do inter-disciplinary work, please appear for ISI-JRF entrance test with subject category "Physics & applied math".  Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an in-person interview to discuss research interests and potential directions.  Contact me if you would like to know more.
🔹 Backgrounds Welcome: Statistics, data science, applied mathematics, physics, engineering, ecology —or anyone with a Master's degree eager to apply quantitative skills to ecology, forecasting, and biodiversity research.

🔬 Research Themes:
- Statistical & mathematical modeling of ecosystems
- Nonlinear dynamics, time series, spatio-temporal modeling
- Biodiversity forecasting under global change
- Data science & machine learning applications in ecology
 🧑‍🔬 Postdoctoral Opportunities
I am open to hosting postdoctoral fellows with NPDF fellowships, or NBHM fellowships, or other externally funded postdoc positions. Please reach out early so we can co-develop a competitive project proposal. Currently, there is no opportunity for ISI-funded postdoc fellowship.

📢 Visiting Scientist position
  • Eligibility: PhD from a recognized Institute/University. Candidates who have freshly submitted their PhD thesis are also encouraged to apply.
  • Initially for 6 months, may be extended for another 6 months depending on the availability of funds. Email me to know more!
📢 Research Internship Opportunity
No vacancies at the moment.

📩 How to Apply
 Please email me (ghoshshyamolina89@gmail.com) with:
  • CV (academic background, skills, relevant experience).
  • A short statement of interest (why you want to join, your research motivation, which research theme excites you most and why, and how your current skillset aligns with that).
  • For PhD applicants, mention clearly if you already hold a fellowship (NET-JRF/INSPIRE, etc.).
